This section starts off with Bella dreaming again, but she doesn't dream of Edward. Instead the starring role in her dream is Jacob. She dreams that she's in the woods with Jacob when they both hear something. Jacob out of defense almost turns into a red and brown wolf. Edward then appears looking like a full on vampire while telling Bella to trust him. Jacob, the wolf, jumps at Edward to protect Bella. Right as she's about to see what Edward will do he wakes up. Not being able to sleep Bella decides to research more about vampires, and comes to the conclusion that Edward must be one. All of her research describes vampires as pale, gorgeous, strong, and fast. What else could explain his strength to shove the van out of the way?
The next day at school it is bright and sunny! but Edward is nowhere to be found. Vampires do not like the sunshine which explains why the Cullens would choose to live in Forks where it rains almost non stop. Bella then makes plans to go dress shopping with her friends Jessica and Angela in Port Angeles over the weekend to give her opinions on their dresses. On their way to dress shopping the girls talk to Bella more about the school's gossip, and apparently one of Bella's admirers,Tyler, is telling everyone that he's taking Bella to prom. While Angela and Jessica finish picking out dresses Bella tells them she's going to the bookstore and will meet up with them for dinner. Bella takes this opportunity while in town to find more books on vampires. When Bella leaves the bookstore she runs into some creepy guys, and that's when it occurrs to her how lost she is. The men corner her. Out of nowhere comes Edward in his shiny volvo to save the day. He scares the guys off and takes Bella back to the restaurant to meet up with the girls, but they've already eaten. Edward then suggests that he and Bella eat together. Over dinner Bella questions Edward about how he knew where she was? He then admits, "I followed you to Port Angeles, I've never tried to keep a specific person alive before, and it's much more troublesome than I would have believed. But that's probably just because it's you. Ordinary people seem to make it through the day without catastrophes. […] I was keeping tabs on Jessica [reading her mind][…] and at first I didn't notice when you took off on your own." Bella learns over the conversation that he reads minds, and that's how he came to her aid by reading the sketchy men's minds.
