Before Bella and Edward can make an escape they see three vampires step out of the woods Laurent, James, and Victoria. They seem vicious. They approach the Cullens, and Laurent is the first to speak by greeting them all. Carlisle then introduces his family including Bella. Each of the groups of vampires start sharing their stories. The new group of vampires are suprised to hear that the Cullen's maintain a permanent home in the town.
With a woosh of the wind James can smell Bella. No one had mentioned that she was human, and James goes into attack mode. Urgently, Carlisle offers to show Laurent, James, and Victoria his home, and tells Edward to take Bella home.
On the way back to Bella's home Edward makes it clear that it is not safe for Bella to be in Forks while the vampires are in attack mode. Now that they know how precious Bella is to Edward it will just make the challenge more satisfying. Edward is worried that James will follow Bella's scent to her home so Bella creates a plan to lead James away from her dad. She explains, "You take me back to Charlie's house. I tell my dad I want to go home to Phoenix. I pack my bags. We wait till James is watching, and then we run. He'll follow us and leave Charlie alone. Charlie won't call the FBI on your family." After leaving Bella's home Alice will take Bella to Phoenix, while Edward leads James in the opposite direction. Edward agrees to the plan, but worries about leaving Bella's side.
As soon as Bella gets home she puts her plan into action. Bella pretends to throw a huge fit telling her dad that she doesn't want to stay in Forks. When he asks why Bella just tells him she dumped Edward and refuses to be tied down in this pathetic town. Her father being so hurt let her leave, but not without begging her to stay first. Bella feels awful leaving her dad and making him feel so badly, but she doesn't want him to be a victim. She leaves.
Bella runs out to her truck and heads towards the Cullen's. When she arrives, Laurent is telling Carlisle about James. Laurent warns that he's never seen James act this way and that he "lethal." The Cullens stick to the plan. Alicewill take her to Phoenix. Esme and Rosalie will take Bella's truck in hopes of leading James in the wrong direction. Edward, Emmett, and Carlisle will go in another direction. The plan is to kill James. Edward and Bella say their goodbye's.
When Bella arrives to the hotel it seems like she's being useless just sitting around waiting for news. She continues to worry about Edward's safety. To pass the time, Bella asks Alice how humans are turned into vampires. Alice explains that vampires are venomous. If they bite someone but don't kill them then the venom will spread through the body turning them into a vampire. It takes about three days and is painful.
Alice sees a vision of James changing his plans. She sees a room full of mirrors so she calls Carlisle. Carlisle then gives the phone to Edward so Bella can talk to him. Edward reports that they lost James, but that everyone is safe.
