Twilight pages 3-67

In Stephanie Meyer's first book to the series, Twilight, Bella Swan moves to the cloudy town of Forks, located in the Olympic Peninsula of northwest Washington State. Bella feels that it's best to move in with her father while her mother travels with her new husband. The town of Forks is the same town Bella's mother left her father in when she was only months old. In Forks it rains more than any other place in the United States, and is constantly under an omnipresent shade. Until the age of fourteen Bella had been compelled to spend a month every summer in Forks. Fourteen was the year she finally put her foot down, and started spending summer vacationing in California with her father. Even though Bella feels that moving is the best she finds it difficult to leave her home in Phoenix. She loves the sun and heat, and feels guilty for leaving her mother.
The flight was five hours, and then it took another hour of driving to reach her new home. Bella was worried after not seeing her father for so long that the car ride would be awkward. Bella's father seemed suprisingly pleased though to have his daughter back. Bella's father had already registered her for high school and bought her a car. He picked her up in his police cruiser as he is the town's sherriff. The reuniting of Bella and her father was a good one, but it is obvious that Bella inherited the trait of not being able to show emotions from him.
Bella describes her new home as green. She comments on the trees and the ground covered in wet moss. She even notices how the air filters down greenly through the trees like an alien planet. The house is just as she remembers it from the earlier years which makes her feel more at peace. Bella notes in this part of the book that the best quality about her father is that he doesn't hover. He left her to get settled alone instead of making meaningless conversation. Bella enjoys being alone and not having to look pleased all the time. It was relieving to be able to let a few tears fall over the home she left.
In such a small town starting school meant that Bella would be the new girl, the talk in the halls, and the one catching everyone's eye. Forks high school had a frightening total of only three-hundred and fifty seven students. Bella dreads being the center of attention so imagining what high school will be like makes her sick.
The first day of school was a blur. Heavy fog was thick in the air making it impossible to see, but this was just another day in Forks. To Bella's suprise she makes many friends. At lunch she notices a group of people who she later finds out are a family. The Cullen sibblings are perfect from their looks to the way they represent themselves. In Bella's Biology class she is forced to sit by the youngest of the group, Edward. He seems disgusted with her and makes no eye contact or conversation. Bella runs into Edward  in the school office after class while he's trying to switch his schedule around so he can avoid having class with her. Edward realizes that Bella is watching him and runs out of the office immediately.
The next day, Edward isn't at school, and just about all the Forks High boys seem a little too interested in Bella. Mike, a boy in Biology, is "taking on the qualities of a golden retriever." Back at Charlie's house, Bella is unpacked. A couple days later, Edward still hasn't returned to school. "For all I knew, he had dropped out of school. I tried not to think about him, but I couldn't totally suppress the worry that I was responsible for his continued absence, ridiculous at it seemed."
When Edward returns Bella catches his eye in the lunch room which worries her about Biology class. He ends up being very friendly as they even work on a lab together, but there is something definitely off about this boy. During the lab Edward accidently touches Bella's hands and his are as cold as ice. Bella feels like she's an "open book," because she reveals so much information about herself during the lab, but Edward says, "On the contrary, I find you very difficult to read."  He seems to find Bella interesting.
The next day, it's snowing outside and the school parking lot is slippery. So slippery, in fact, that while Bella is getting out of her car a boy loses control of his van and it starts sliding towards Bella. Edward somehow has time to dash across the school parking lot and push Bella out of the way.
Bella and Edward go to the hospital after the accident. Edward doesn't even have a bruise on his body, despite having stopped the van with his bare hands. Bella's doctor is Carlisle Cullen, Edward's adoptive father. After checking her over, he lets Bella leave. Bella curiously confronts Edward, wanting to know how he managed to save her. I feel like Bella should have just let it be and said thank you to Edward. It's really selfish to pull a secret for someone out of curiosity. After Bella confronts Edward he begins to be more standoffish causing Bella to believe he regrets saving her. Maybe he's just protecting his secret? He obviously has something he doesn't want her to figure out. Bella is furious, but gets nothing out him. However, that night, she dreams of Edward for the first time.
